Kevin has been drawing and painting since he was six years old. He recently rediscovered his passion for art through his Help for Heroes recovery programme, as he explained: “I joined the Army at 17 and became a Coldstream Guard – a very proud part of my life. I served in Northern Ireland where I injured my back while out on patrol 1982, and I've had nothing but trouble ever since. I've had four spinal operations and to top it off I suffered a stroke.
“When I left the Army, I struggled to cope with civilian life. I drank heavily and became depressed, and self-medicated to numb the pain I was in. Back then, we didn’t have Help for Heroes, or much military service help. I stopped drinking 18 years ago, which helped me to start my recovery and I heard about Help for Heroes through a friend.
“I've been in Help for Heroes recovery programme for over three years and it’s been brilliant. I've been able to do things I couldn’t do before like my art work. It's like being back in the army with like-minded people.”
