No one’s life should be dictated by their mental and physical health. Especially if it has been affected by their career. For people like Mark, sadly, this remains the case.
Following 24 years in the Military Mark’s career ended abruptly. Suffering life-changing injuries he was medically discharged:
“Being dumped into civvy street was difficult. Without Help for Heroes it would probably be a very different story as I was on a slippery slope. I don’t think I’d be here today if it wasn’t for them.”
Introduced to The Help for Heroes Band of Brothers Fellowship, Mark found a much-needed lifeline:
“I’d always wanted to be a bike mechanic, but I could never afford the equipment or training. Help for Heroes paid for my training and purchased design software and fitting equipment which enabled me to branch out on my own. I also engaged with their Hidden Wounds service and had a Psychological Wellbeing Advisor.”
To thank the Charity for launching his career in bike design, building and repairs, Mark built a carbon bicycle for the Creative Force exhibition:
“I don’t have an artistic bone in my body and can’t even draw a stick man! The bike is something which has come from my heart and that’s what art is all about. Taking part in Creative Force was a challenge but it gave me a focus and a goal to aim for. I would love to end up riding this bike as its fully functional so intended to be ridden.”
Today, although Mark’s health continues to deteriorate he still enjoys life:
“For me, the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was worse than my physical injuries. They tend to heal but the bad memories don’t go away. I wouldn’t change anything I’ve done though as it’s made me who I am. Help for Heroes has been a godsend – they keep me going.”
Every day, highly-trained individuals, like Mark, face an unknown future because they have been wounded, or they may have developed a serious illness whilst serving our country.
Help Mark and countless others who put their lives on the line for us have a second chance at life.
Life changing projects like Creative Force rely on public generosity. By donating today, you are enabling more wounded Veterans and their families to recover from physical and psychological injuries.
